DIY: Black Cat Costume
1:00 PM
This is a super easy costume to make, even if you only have a day before Halloween to make it. It can be made for a little person, or even a big person.
Here is my little person. I can hardly stand how cute she looks. Such a little sweetie!
Here is our video tutorial of the entire cat costume, if you're interested.
Written instructions with photos are below this video, just keep on scrolling!
Ok here is how I made the tail...
Get a wire hanger. you only need one. cut off one end and bend it to your liking.
Wrap the tail-shaped wire hanger in fuzzy furry feather stuff. Hot glue into place as you go.
Keep wrapping and gluing.
Finally, attach it to some elastic the size of your waist or your little person's waist, and there you have it. A tail that actually stays up and stays put.
(I attached it with hot glue, and secured it with a little piece of felt.)
And now for the Ears. These took me a little while to figure out. The key is to not make them too heavy or too big. Here is the magic combination for ears that will stay put even for the littlest of kitties.
Cut a piece of felt the shape of a cat ear. I stitched a little satin piece on the top to make it extra cute and to add a little dimension.
Hot glue the awesome fuzzy stuff on the outer edge of the ear.
Gather the bottom of the ear together and stitch or hot glue into place. I stitched it for extra durability.
Hot glue some clips on the back.
I put my little girl's hair into pig tails and simply clipped the ears on.
Easy as pie, and cute as can be!
Best Part, because they are not on a headband she won't be tempted to rip them off her head. Wahoo, 10 points for mom!
Now for the hard part... drawing on some whiskers and a little nose. Only one day to figure out how in the world I will do that with this little wiggly one year old....
Wish me luck!
EEEEEKKKK!!! I can't wait for Halloween!!

P.S. Halloween was AMAZING! I did it!!! I drew some whiskers on successfully!!
And here is a little secret to remove makeup from your little cutie when trick-or-treating is done...
Just rub a tiny amount of coconut oil to the makeup and wash away with a warm washcloth. It is like a magic eraser and it won't irritate baby's skin! AWESOME!

ReplyDeleteSeriously the cutest costume and model! Well done you .... I'm so happy I've seen this, my little one is a cat at next weeks Christmas play. Thank you, off to buy all the 'ingredients''. I will send pics when done!
ReplyDeleteHow adorable!! I want to make this for my little nugget for Halloween, & was wondering how you made the tutu so full & fluffy. It's my favorite!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the sweet comment! I used A LOT of tulle and simply tied in onto elastic. I found that more tulle cut into shorter pieces was the key to make it look super full and fluffy! Good luck!
DeleteSo cute ! I love it !!!!
DeleteDid you make the tutu and put the black fur on the shirt as well? Very cute!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute. Thank you for sharing. I will try and make it for my 3 year old and I am thinking of doing a white version for my 2 year old.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute. Thank you for sharing. I will try and do it for my little one for this Halloween.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. My 2 year old decided she wants to be a cat this halloween. And the tutu costumes are adorable! I was trying to figure out how to do the tail without having something dragging on the ground. Now I will just have to figure out how to do ears, she doesn't let me put ANYTHING in her hair. I am hoping we can try what you did and she will think shes so cute she'll leave them! Wishful thinking. Your daughter is absolutely adorable and rocks the costume.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!!! Your comment is so sweet! Good luck with gettin those ears to stay put! ;)
DeleteDo you make the outfit to sale? Could you make me the ears, tail, and tutu? If so how much?
ReplyDeleteI could do this... I just have no clue what I would charge...
DeleteThis is the cutest thing ever! My 2 year old loves to pretend that she is a cat so this is purrrfect for her Halloween costume. She also loves tutus so its a win/win. Now to find the materials :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Thanks for the sweet comments! Good luck on your supply hunt! Happy Halloween! ;)
DeleteThis is so adorable. As soon as I saw it I knew what my little one was gonna be this halloween. Thanks so much for your inspiration. I can't wait to see how it turns out!
ReplyDeleteHow short did you cut the tulle? I would like to attempt to make it shorter and fluffy but usually mine is pretty long! Thank you so much for showing us all how to make this! I've had my heart set on this for months now. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good question. I can't remember the exact measurements on the tulle. I know it was pretty short though. Sorry! Thanks for the sweet comments! I am so glad that you are able to use this tutorial! How exciting! Happy Halloween!
DeleteI love this costume! And your daughter is adorable in it! I think I'm going to make something similar for my two daughters this week, but add purple. I was wondering if you recalled the fabric price? I am try to figure out cost, but I don't think Google will know what I mean if I type fuzzy furry feather stuff. Lol!

ReplyDeleteOh I love the idea of adding purple!! CUTE! The fur/fuzzy stuff was bought by the yard. I want to say it was like 2-3 bucks a yard. Maybe cheaper. Good luck! Thanks for the sweet comments about my little cutie! Happy Halloween!
DeleteAwesome! Thank you for getting back to me. So excited about this! Happy Halloween to you as well!!
DeleteI think this is the cutest costume! I just completed the ears and tail for my 18 month old daughter. Two questions for you: did the fuzzy stuff shed everywhere? It is all over my floor! Hoping it will hold up for the party we are going to and trick or treating. Also, what type of elastic did you use? I am not a crafty person by nature and am struggling with how to attach te tail. Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteJen, I believe she used no-roll elastic. You can buy it in packages at the fabric store. Hope it helps!
ReplyDeleteI'm making a pink and white version of this costume for my almost one year old...just more convenient since we have a solid pink onesie and pants but no black clothes to speak of!
Can you please make a tutorial on the tutu? I read your comments but still have no idea how to make the tutu.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your awesome post! I was looking for ideas on how to make a Splat the Cat costume and this will be perfect!
ReplyDeleteSO precious! I threw one together for my 15 month old and it was a big hit! Thanks for the idea :-) http://www.unoriginalmom.com/little-black-cat-costume/

So so cute! My daughter wants to be a Cat for halloween. Do you have any tips on the Tutu? She also has no hair so any suggestions on the ears? Maybe i can clip them to a headband. Anyways, super cute costume. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSince my daughter won't wear hair clips or headbands, I'm thinking of sewing a little hat like this one, with the ears on the opposite seam as she uses for the dino points. :) http://www.stitchedbycrystal.com/2011/10/tutorial-dino-hat.html
DeleteI made this but stuck on securing the tail. Any suggestions
ReplyDeleteMy daughter doesn't have enough hair to pin stuff in. Any ideas on how to make the ears into a headband?
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the tutu? My daughter is 9 months & after seeing your daughter in this outfit I want mine to have the exact same one for her first Halloween... Can't find a tutu like this anywhere!!
I love your costume. do you have a link on how to make the tutu? Thanks
ReplyDeleteyes! There is a tutorial on our blog acutally!! http://www.doityourselfdivas.com/2010/10/ballerina-tutu.html
DeleteMy 10-year old daughter wants to be a black cat...your tail and ears tutorial will be so helpful! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteYay! I am so glad this will work out for you and your daughter!
DeleteYay! I am so glad this will work out for you and your daughter!
ReplyDeleteShe's a cutiepie!!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering, how many yards did you use for this? Do you think that half a yard would be enough? Thanks!
This is so darling! I'm making this for my 14 month old daughter this year. What did you use to draw the whiskers on her face? I need something that she won't rub off or smear (as she will inevitably rub her face right after I draw it on), but can be removed easily. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteEasy tutu tip. Buy tulle on a roll, available at any fabric store, cut a price of cardboard twice the length you want the tutu (cardboard that fabric is sold on is perfect size for a tutu this length and free at the fabric store) wrap the tulle around the cardboard length wise. Once the entire roll is wrapped place rubber bands around each end to hold fabric in place. Cut both end. This will leave you with perfect size strips to tie to 1/4 elastic or ribbon. To tie them on all you have to do is fold in half length wise, slide the top under the elastic (I suggest taping the elastic it to a table) reach thru the hole at the top (at fold and pull the loose end thru. Slide it over and pull tight. Keep doing this until you reach the desired size around you need.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it!! This is probably a sillly question. But, can I use super glue? Instead of hot glue.
ReplyDeleteI tried making a white version of this costume but had a few problems with it. The boa fabric would not stay glued to the hanger (I found some small rubber bands to hold fabric in place) and I just can't seem to get the tail secure enough to stay put. I also could not get the ears to stick up straight on the clips, they just lye flat on the head. Any suggestions that might help would be greatly appreciated. It's a really cute costume idea in theory so far, just need to figure out the execution.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Your daughter looks super cute. I also had tricked with the tail. Initially I used feather boa on wire Janet but it was too heavy and the boa wouldn't stay glued. I then used a pliable wire ( had one lying around and can be found in any electronics sections ) and instead of gluing the boa I used florists wire to wrap it on. The best part was, if my daughter decided to sit on her tail it would just bend and not poke her or hurt her. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeletethis is another great creative idea!!!... loved it...thanks for posting
